Purpose

The purpose of the scholarships is to assist children of eligible Returned Servicemen and Women who have seen overseas active service within the Australian Defence Forces.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria must be met in order to qualify for a Cunningham Scholarship.

  1. For a Child or Grandchild of a returned Service Person to be eligible for a Cunningham Scholarship, the relevant Australian Defence Person must have been;

  • In Operational Service in a forum recognised by the Australian Government as a war zone or warlike area OR

  • Awarded the Australian Active Service Medal or it’s equivalent replacement OR

  • Awarded the Australian Service Medal or it’s equivalent OR

  • Been in continuous General Service in the ADF for not less than 10 consecutive years AND

  • Permanently resided in the Scartwater Area for not less than 10years following discharge from the ADF.

Scartwater Area means Proserpine to Innisfail and west to the Queensland border.

2. Cunningham Scholarships will be awarded based on results obtained in the “Exit Statement “for years 11 and 12 and not just the year 12 results,  at a school in Queensland.  Results by 14 January.

3. Applicants must attend and undertake full time studies in an approved tertiary course at the James Cook University of North Queensland, however if course are unavailable through JCU then permission may be given to attend other approved Universities within Queensland.

4. If applicants take a “Gap Year” then they must provide details of enrolment in their course of studies

5. Applications must be received by 30 November on each year accompanied by parent or guardian’s agreement form and evidence of Parents or Grandparents overseas wartime service.

The above criteria are mandatory.

Requirements After Scholarship Award

  • Monetary allowance is subject to the good behavior and diligence of the student;

  • ANNUAL RESULTS are required to be provided to the Trustees no later than 14 January each year. Failure in a majority of subjects taken for 1 year will result in a suspension until those subjects failed are successfully completed.

  • Failure to comply to either of these conditions may result in suspension of payment of the scholarship or revocation of the scholarship in the absolute discretion of the Trustees.

  • Term of the scholarship is for the duration of the course, to a maximum of six years.

Discretionary Matters

  • The current allowance is $4,000.00 per annum. The Trustees may alter that allowance at any time in their absolute discretion.

  • Trustees may, in their absolute discretion, allow an Applicant to enroll in any other institute of higher education based in Queensland.

  • If a student is awarded any other scholarship then payment of the Cunningham Scholarship will not be made.
